Recreating the Lighting Effect from the Movie Everything Everywhere all at Once

In this video I experimented with LED lights called Astera Titan Tubes. These were the lights used in the 2022 award-winning A24 film Everything Everywhere all at Once. The Astera Titan Tubes are full RGB LED tubes that are DMX controllable using the Astera app on a phone or tablet and the Astera Box, a wifi transmitter that connects the lights to the phone. By setting up the lights on a C-stand in a triangle orientation and programming the effect in the app, I could replicate a similar look as the movie, whereby the pixels of light flow around the triangle while shifting colors.

Experiments like this aren’t really about copying an effect exactly to the tee. It’s about learning new tools and expanding our knowledge so we can unlock new possibilities and creative ideas for future projects. It’s about adapting what we learn from experiments like this, learning new tools and techniques, and approaching ever-closer to mastering our craft. Of course, mastering the craft is an endless, lifelong pursuit, but it’s more important than ever to keep growing as a filmmaker and always staying curious. The state of the industry is in a really exciting period where technology is rapidly advancing more than any other time in history. New tools and gear are constantly being developed and we always try our best to stay on top it so we can provide the best service to our clients and create the most compelling, dynamic videos possible.
