How to Recreate the Look of the Film 1917

In this video, I break down how to create a custom LUT, or Look Up Table, for color grading video. A LUT is essentially a filter that you apply on top of the image to change the look or feel. You can use many different programs including 3d LUT Creator, but in this video I show how to do it in Photoshop. Photoshop is a great entry level way to create a LUT, but a program like 3d LUT Creator will give you more control.

The example I use in this video is the film 1917, which has a muted teal and orange look, where the skin tones are very pale. It’s a classic look for a period piece set in World War II and is very common among World War Two movies.

I then explain how to apply the LUT to the image in Adobe Premiere using the Lumetri Color tool. If you don’t feel like making your own custom LUTs, you can download this LUT through the link in the video, and you can find other LUTs for purchase at websites like Lutify.
